When Was the Qur’an Revealed?

Introduction

The Holy Qur’an is the final revelation from Allah, guiding humanity to truth. Muslims believe the Qur’an is perfect, preserved, and unchanged.

Time of Revelation

The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

  • In 610 CE
  • In the month of Ramadan
  • On Laylat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree)

“The Qur’an was revealed in the month of Ramadan.” (Qur’an 2:185)

It descended in two ways:

  1. Entire Qur’an sent to the lowest heaven
  2. Revealed gradually to Prophet ﷺ over 23 years

First Revelation

The first verses were from Surah Al-Alaq:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created…”

Angel Jibreel (AS) brought the message in Cave Hira.
