Who Were the Rightly Guided Caliphs?

Introduction

After the passing of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), leadership of the Muslim Ummah passed to four noble companions. They are known as the Rightly Guided Caliphs (Khulafā-ur-Rāshidīn) because they ruled with justice, knowledge, and the teachings of Islam. 1. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (RA)

Umar (RA) was known for strength, justice, and fairness. Under his rule, Islam spread rapidly to Persia, Egypt, and Syria, establishing the largest empire of the time.

  • Introduced public treasury (Bayt-ul-Maal)
  • Created courts, police system, and Islamic calendar
  • Built welfare programs and public roads
  • Protected rights of non-Muslims in the state

Umar (RA) is remembered for his statement:

“If a mule stumbles in Iraq, I fear Allah may ask me why I did not maintain the road.”

3. Uthman ibn Affan (RA)

Reign: 644–656 CE (12 years)

Uthman (RA) was gentle, generous, and wealthy, always spending for Islam. He married two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ, earning the title Dhul-Nurayn (Man of Two Lights).

  • Expanded the Muslim empire further
  • Formally compiled the Qur’an into a standard Mushaf and distributed copies globally
  • Strengthened naval forces
  • Supported Islamic education and charity

Despite his peaceful nature, enemies created fitnah, leading to his martyrdom while reading Qur’an.

4. Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA)

Reign: 656–661 CE (5 years)

Ali (RA), cousin and son-in-law of Prophet ﷺ, was known for bravery and knowledge. He spent his life defending Islam, from youth until leadership.

  • Faced civil unrest with patience and wisdom
  • Emphasized justice & hardship tolerance
  • Ensured Islamic law and governance continued

He was martyred while praying in the mosque, showing his lifelong devotion to Allah.
