Belief in angels (Malaika) is one of the six pillars of Iman (faith) in Islam.
Without believing in angels, a person’s faith is incomplete.
Muslims believe that angels are real beings, created by Allah, who perform special duties in the universe according to His command.
They are not visible to human eyes, but they are always around — recording deeds, protecting people, and carrying out Allah’s orders.
“The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. All of them believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285)
This verse clearly shows that believing in angels is a core part of the Muslim faith.
🌟 1. Who Are the Angels in Islam?
Angels are created by Allah from light (nur).
They are pure beings — they do not eat, sleep, or get tired.
They have no free will like humans; they never disobey Allah.
“They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are commanded.”
(Surah At-Tahrim 66:6)
Angels exist in countless numbers — more than humans can imagine.
They live in the heavens and on earth, each with a specific duty.
🌈 2. The Main Angels and Their Duties
The Qur’an and Hadith mention several important angels by name and describe their responsibilities. Here are some of them:
a. Jibreel (Gabriel)
- The greatest of all angels.
- Brings revelation (wahy) from Allah to the prophets.
- He revealed the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
That’s why he is called Ruh al-Ameen — “The Trustworthy Spirit.”
b. Mikail (Michael)
- Controls rainfall, weather, and sustenance.
- Provides food and nourishment by Allah’s command.
c. Israfeel
- The angel who will blow the Trumpet to signal the Day of Judgment.
- The first blow will cause everything to die, and the second will bring all back to life.
d. Malak al-Maut (Angel of Death)
- Takes the souls of humans when their time in this world ends.
- Works with other angels who assist him in removing the soul.
e. Kiraman Katibeen
- Two angels assigned to every human.
- One records good deeds, the other records bad deeds.
“Not a word does a person utter except that there is an observer ready to record it.” (Surah Qaf 50:18)
f. Munkar and Nakir
- Question the soul in the grave after death.
- They ask: “Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?”
g. The Guardian Angels (Mu’aqqibat)
- Protect humans from harm by Allah’s command.
“For each one are successive angels before and behind him who protect him by the command of Allah.” (Surah Ar-Ra’d 13:11)
💫 3. Why Is Belief in Angels Important?
Belief in angels teaches Muslims faith in the unseen (ghayb) — things beyond human sight or understanding.
It reminds us that Allah’s creation is far greater than what we can see.
Here’s why it matters:
- It strengthens faith: Knowing angels exist shows the perfection of Allah’s system.
- It builds accountability: Angels record every action, making believers more careful with their deeds.
- It gives comfort: Knowing guardian angels protect you brings peace and security.
- It deepens spirituality: Realizing that angels pray for believers encourages one to do more good.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The angels pray for anyone who teaches good to others.”
(Tirmidhi)
🕊️ 4. What Happens If Someone Denies Angels?
If a person denies the existence of angels, it means they are rejecting part of what Allah has revealed.
That disbelief can remove a person from the circle of Iman, because angels are part of the core belief system in Islam.
🌙 5. Lessons Muslims Learn from Angels
- Obedience: Angels obey Allah completely; they never question His commands.
- Purity: They remind us to keep our hearts pure and free from sin.
- Service: Angels serve Allah without seeking reward — teaching us sincerity.
- Remembrance: Angels constantly remember Allah, saying SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah all the time.
🌺 Conclusion
Muslims believe in angels because Allah and His Prophet ﷺ taught us about them.
Though unseen, angels play an essential role in the universe — carrying revelation, recording deeds, protecting people, and controlling nature by Allah’s command.
Belief in angels fills the heart with humility and awareness. It reminds us that we are never alone, and that everything we say or do is known to Allah through His angels.
When a Muslim believes in angels sincerely, their faith becomes stronger, their worship becomes purer, and their connection with Allah grows deeper. 🌙
